Neuropathies

Know more about Neuropathy Treatment!

Just a few years back, the options for neuropathy treatment were quite limited. Patients suffering from chronic pain suffered as a result. Health professionals used to concentrate on drugs and medications for calming symptoms related to pain and neuropathy for a long time. Even today, many doctors as well as patients believe that this is the only way of getting some relief from excruciating pain. At Pennsylvania Spine and Headache Center we also follow this approach for neuropathy treatment.

Idiopathic Neuropathy

There are many types of neuropathy treatment and idiopathy neuropathy is just one of them. The meaning of this word “idiopathy” means “no specific cause known”. Previously, the majority of the cases related to neuropathy were considered idiopathic. All these cases were in fact a metabolic syndrome which is an alarming issue. The kind of lifestyle followed these days allows no time for exercise and there is also a lot of stress and tensions in life. As a result of this scenario, the body lacks lean muscles and has a lot of body fat deposited at different parts of the body. It is also referred to as pre-diabetes condition as if no treatment option is chosen to rectify this problem, a person may become diabetic. The only way of curing this problem is by opting for a better lifestyle, adopting healthy food habits, choosing some activities to stay fit, etc.

Treatment for Neuropathy

The best way of treating this issue is by taking a firm action against poor eating habits, trying hard for losing weight, sugar cuts, reducing processed foods, etc. Adopting all these measures will bring about a radical difference in this condition. Trying a wide range of medication or taking medication every now and then will not bring about a change in the situation.

Neuropathies are more common than is widely appreciated, and may follow trauma, nerve traction, compression or entrapment, repetitive injuries, surgery, electric or thermal injury, toxic exposures, infections or systemic disorders such as diabetes or  thyroid disease. Nerve insult may involve major nerves and branches, entire plexuses or even small fibers. Neuropathic pain syndromes are often characterised by severe pain and disturbing sensations that may include burning, squeezing, aching, throbbing, pressure or electric radiating sensations that may get worse over time and with certain activities or environmental conditions. Symptoms are usually constant, with waxing and waning pain intensities which are generally rated as severe to debilitating. Reactive depression is common. Patients are often very difficult to treat and symptoms are frequently refractory to management. Utilizing a variety of interventional and other modalities for neuropathy treatment, we have had generally reasonably good results, with patients noting decreased pain improved quality of life and better activities of daily living.
